Most people get one chance at their Open Enrollment, however, some will get a second chance.
- Open Enrollment starts the month your Medicare Part B starts and continues for 6 months.
- Many carriers allow you to lock in your Medigap Rate 6 months prior to your Part B start date.
- Some states and carriers allow only 3 months.
- During open enrollment, you can enroll into any plan that is available to you with any carrier without health questions and the need to medically qualify.
- You can change as often as you want during this period without having to qualify medically.

5 Things To Know
before start you should know
Many people get Original Medicare automatically when others must sign up. You may need to sign up If you are 65(Or turning 65) and not drawing social security yet.
You can’t just wake up one day and decide. “Hey, I think I will start Medicare today.” There are only certain times a year you can sign up. The most common is 3 months before, the month of, and up to 3 months after you turn 65 There are a few other times you can start your Medicare however this is the most common.
The short answer is Yes, however it is not that simple. If you have coverage that is considered at least as good as Medicare’s coverage a penalty will not apply.
When starting Medicare you have 3 basic options.
1. Stay on Original Medicare with a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan
2. Opt for Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage to handle your health coverage instead of Medicare
3. Stay with Original Medicare, Pick up a Medicare Supplement to fill the gaps, and a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.
Depending on your Income levels you could qualify for help paying for your Part B Premium, and/or Prescription costs and premiums.
